Mellinus arvensis

This wasp is common and widely distributed in Britain. It flies relatively late in the year and nests in sandy soil, often in aggregations. The females hunt flies, grab them with their mandibles and then paralyse them with their sting. The paralysed flies are taken back to the nest and used to provision the brood cells.
